At the ALX Dog Walk, we believe that a highly effective way to tackle big issues like sustainability and plastic pollution is through a joyful approach. Our annual Sustainability Festival and 2K Dog Walk turns what can feel like an overwhelming or even boring topic into a celebration filled with wagging tails, music, games, eco-friendly vendors, and community spirit.
We call this approach #FunActivism.
Why Fun Works When Other Methods Don’t. Sustainability messaging often leans heavily on dire statistics and scare tactics. While those approaches have their place, they can leave people feeling anxious, helpless, or numb. We take a different path: when people are smiling, laughing, and enjoying themselves with their dogs, they’re far more open to learning and changing.
This isn’t a revolutionary idea, but it’s surprisingly underused in the sustainability space—especially around plastic-free living. Different people absorb information differently. Some respond to alarming facts. Others light up when they see practical, positive alternatives presented in a festive atmosphere. By offering both education and entertainment, we meet people where they are.
Our annual event features:
- A scenic 2k dog walk & sustainability festival
- Interactive displays using single-use plastics
- Eco-vendors
- Dog-friendly activities
- Live music, kids’ activities, and giveaways made from recycled or sustainable materials
- Plastic Art Competition
- Dog Show with prizes
- An Eco-Goodie Bag with a t-shirt, dog bandana, and other eco-treats
Proof That #FunActivism Works After every event, we survey participants. The results consistently show that our approach is not only enjoyable but effective. Overwhelming majorities report increased awareness of everyday plastic pollution and real intentions to make changes at home. Our latest SurveyMonkey results (15% return of 452 people) for our April 18, 2026 event said:
- Overall rating: 98% Excellent to Good (Excellent/70%, Very Good/28%, Good/0%)
- Quality of educational content: 83% Excellent to Good (Excellent/39%, Very Good/27%, Good/17%)
- Motivated to change habits: 89% Extremely to Moderately (Extremely motivated/18%, Very/41%, Moderately/30%)
Many attendees return year after year, bringing friends and family—proof that the message sticks when it’s delivered with heart and humor.
#FunActivism as a Marketing Superpower The biggest takeaway? Fun is a powerful tool in any change-maker’s toolbox. Whether you’re a nonprofit, small business, school, or community group, blending education with enjoyment can dramatically improve engagement and long-term behavioral change.
You don’t have to be a giant organization to do this. Simple touches like music, games, free samples, or pet-friendly vibes can transform a standard awareness event into something people actually look forward to and remember.
